Oral Reading Matters

In today’s classrooms, reading instruction often focuses on comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. One foundational practice underpins all of these skills: reading out loud. Oral reading gives students the opportunity to build fluency while strengthening their confidence, language development, and comprehension, creating a feedback loop with progress they can hear.

Research consistently shows that reading aloud develops better prosody, or rhythm in language than silent reading. Oral reading also creates opportunities for correction and growth, as silent errors go unnoticed. Beyond the benefits of speech, reading aloud (and hearing stories read aloud) supports listening comprehension by allowing students to hear how proficient reading sounds. In summary, literacy as a whole relies on a strong oral reading foundation (Carnegie Learning and Town End Research School).

Fluency and reading comprehension are deeply connected. Students who struggle to decode words often expend so much mental energy on pronunciation that they have little capacity left to focus on meaning. Effective oral reading practice helps students develop automaticity, allowing them to recognize words more quickly and devote greater attention to understanding what they read (Carnegie Learning).

Guided oral reading also helps students develop confidence. When students feel successful as they practice reading aloud, they become more comfortable taking risks with challenging texts. This increased confidence often leads to greater classroom participation and stronger overall reading achievement (Education World).

Rally Reader believes passionately in the impact of oral reading. Eli P., a middle school ELA teacher, explains: “My favorite feature of Rally Reader is the oral reading aspect. Reading fluency is one of the biggest barriers students currently have when it comes to reading comprehension. They are so bogged down with pronouncing and sounding words out that their brains can’t always comprehend what they’re reading. Rally Reader offers legitimate practice in reading fluency while also providing corrections for mistakes.”

By combining meaningful oral reading practice with immediate feedback in books students are truly motivated to read, Rally Reader helps students strengthen fluency, build confidence, and unlock deeper reading comprehension. When students become more fluent oral readers, they gain the freedom to focus on what truly matters: understanding, analyzing, and enjoying good books.
